own the Rabbit Hole: the Women of Talmadge #2 - Part 2

Shortly after I wrote, Down the Rabbit Hole: The Women of Talmadge #2 (Doris Hansson), I received an email from her friend and neighbor Gloria Bader. The email reads as follows.

Hi Laura:

Thank you for your research about Doris Hansson. We live at 4615 48th in between Doris’s home with Edward Fleming and her home with Johnny Hansson. We were friends and neighbors for over 10 years when Johnny died. We stayed close to Doris until her own death. We first moved into 4615 48th in December of 1986 and Johnny and Doris came to our back door with a cake. We were instant friends and for many Thursdays, we went to Tio Lio’s on Fairmount for an early Mexican dinner. My husband, David Archibald, would go to Home Depot with Johnny on Sunday mornings when Doris went to church. These are pictures of Doris and Johnny in our home.

Kind regards,

Gloria Bader

Just my luck, I found a picture of Doris Willis from May 11, 1941, in the San Diego Union. She was part of a Dance Committee organizing the “Exchangettes” benefit dance. Doris is pictured at the far right. She and the other women are holding dance tickets in their hands. The benefit was to raise money for Christmas baskets for needy families. This picture was taken the year WWII began, and everyone's lives changed forever.
